Hi all,
I just left my first thread on the "who's who" forum introducing myself as another newbie, having just purchased a used 280DA; but then I thought I should appeal to a broader audience with a couple of questions.
Anyone have a recommendation for a solid insurance vendor? Or is BoatUS universally preferred?
Anyone familiar with the SeaRay Legacy (extended marine protection plan)?

NBOA www.nboat.com gives Sea Ray owners a discount. The cost for me was cheaper with Boat US, according to NBOA it was due to the age of my boat. I'd try them. Also use the search function. I knew there was a thread here about insurance in the past year. Here it is, READ THIS

I use "Charter Lakes". I've used NBOA and Boat US in the past and Charter Lakes is cheapest, with the most coverage for the money. Their URL follows: http://www.charterlakes.com/

I've recommended Charter Lakes to many on my dock and, after research, most have switched for the reasons that I've highlighted above.

Good Luck

Much thanks, WileeCoyote and Al Gross! I'll let you know how I fare.

I've had great results with Sea Tows "Sea Insure" .In June we got nailed by a noreaster and it somehow put a 2ft rip in my bimini . w/in a week got check for $1050 ,my canvas guy replaced all the canvas. Then in Sept I happened to run aground (dont ask)..coupler went ,got $2900 to pull engine and do work .

Progressive is worth a look. I use them.

Our Sea Ray was damaged by a careless boater who ran into it when we were tied up in a slip in Northern Lower Michigan. He was in a beat up 39 foot SR that was filthy and had a bunch of low class looking passengers. We figured that we would have to eat the loss based upon first impressions. His insurance was with Boat US. They did a fantastic job of handling the claim. I had our boat repaired by the local SR dealer which did a very good job and turned the claim into his company with a copy of the police report and USCG report. Got a check for $2,000+ for the work within 2 weeks. We could not have been happier. In speaking with the company rep I learned they planned to require a survey of his vessel prior to issuing a renewal for his boat. My guess is he got dropped.

While we use a different company, Boat US did a fine job in my experience. Just as important as boat insurance is liability coverage. If it's warranted, you should consider a million dollar+ umbrella policy since most liability limits on generic boat policies are quite low.

State Farm on everything. Disclaimer: My wife and I both work for State Farm. So does my wife's sister, brother, and brother in law. My dad is retired from SF. Thus, we are obviously biased.

+1  -- I had Progressive last year and switched to NBOA this year. They were a lot cheaper in my case.

I use Safeco. I was suprised when I bought my 1st boat this season that a lot of people local do not even have insurance on their boats

Hey Chris,
Since I have home, cars, etc with State Farm, I'll give then a look. Didn't even think of it.

Hey guys,
After getting 4 insurance quotes for my 280DA, I'm ending up w/ State Farm who happens to carry my homes and cars. Quote was 60% of BoatUS, Charter and NBOA for same coverage. Guess I'll find out if I did the right thing the first time I need to make a claim (?). Thanks for the input.
Greg

Hi Frank,
It is an all risk agreed value policy - apples to apples.
