When my kids were much younger we drove to a farm about an hour away and got us a puppy border collie chocolate lab cross, my son was 5 at the time. Today my 19 year old son (same one ) and I dug a large hole and laid the old guy to rest. Not the first dog I've buried but this one was as good as they come.
Interesting bonding with my son seeing it from a fathers perspective I let him take as much time as he needed.
Good boy Chevy.
Goodbye dear friend.

A tear in my eye-burying the old guy and watching your son as a young man growing before your eyes-life is good-keep a good thought-thanks for sharing

Sorry for your family to lose a great friend.Dogs are healing caring animals, you cant get many humans as loving or loyal. They know when you hurt or are feeling sorrow and give you extra attention asking no more than basic neccesities and kindness.

So sorry to read of your loss. Been there done that and didn't like it either. Always a tough time-:(

Thanks All, I am happy he got to stay at home with dad by his side for the last week, he even still got up to go outside until the day before yesterday, It was a struggle but he didnt want to go inside. Ive had dogs suffer to the point of putting them down so Im happy we didnt have to do that. What more could any of us ask for.
I am very proud of the way my son handled it. With tears in his eyes he didn't flinch when it was time and knew that digging the hole and putting his dog in it was part of... , well, he just knew he had to be a part of it. Without me saying it.He didnt speak, just kept digging.
Thanks again, I knew many would understand what its like.

So sorry, bringing a tear to my eye thinking back of losing my beloved Irish. Watching my son say good bye to his childhood buddy. Nothing like a boy and his dog ♡

We have been there several times and it never is easy and each time is just as difficult. At times like this we cannot be selfish and know that Chevy is at peace, not hurting and in a much better place.

It is always tough losing a good friend. We buried our 15 yr old black Lab yesterday, he passed away from a respiratory arrest. My wife was home, so it was good for her to be there with him. It was a warm sunny day and he was in the back yard lying in the sun when he left us. Midnight brought a lot of joy and fun to the family- he will be missed. We brought him home from an Amish Farm we visited while picking pumpkins for Halloween when my boys were 5 and 11 yrs old. There are times when you are lucky to have that one special dog that you can never replace. After he passed, we made a plaster imprint of his paw and put some lettered beads with his name to make a little remembrance of him. We laid him to rest under a large shady bush in the yard.

Sorry for your loss.

It's comforting to know our old friends lived long happy lives and got to stay with family right until the end. As much as we will miss them it would trouble me if I thought I should have done better for him, but I dont. I am satisfied he lived and died as well as I wish for myself or anyone.
I have no doubt Midnight did as well.
It's nice that you did the memorial, We put a ball and the Chevy emblem I made for his doghouse with him.
It's still tough to say goodbye.

Thanks Dave for sharing the poem. It is good for all of us that have lost a beloved pet. It says what I said to my wife that he will be waiting for us when our time comes and we will be together again.

I'm very sorry for your loss. Having lost three in the past 3 years I know what you are going through. I hope you and your family are doing well.
