Has anyone ever had to remove the 6 allen bolts from the top of a Good windlass to retrieve the rope?

I think it is a good windlass and the support by the company in New Jersey is outstanding

Our 1994 Good windlass just lost the motor. Rather than replace the motor we chose to upgrade to the rope/chain combo unit they have. Machining was perfect, operation perfect always helpful on the phone. If you don’t need an all chain rode they are as good as any windlass out there. Hope that helps.

And to the op, my rope release was two allens on the side of the unit. Again, call the company and they will walk you through the specifics of your model

I have been debating what to do myself. My current Good Windlass works ok, but always thought of upgrading. I was considering changing to Good's rope/chain model and using all chain, but was advised against it by Mr. Good when I saw him at the New York City Boat Show a few years back. He says no more than 10' or 15' of chain is enough with their windlass.
Still can't decide what to do and still don't want to part with a couple of boat bucks yet either :)

Gerry, with the rope chain model you still get the free drop. Boy that chain takes off! I couldn't imagine how fast a chain locker would clear out.
I wanted to purchase a Maxwell windlass, however looking at the amp draw it required was more than the sea ray factory wiring could handle. I just didn't want to get in that deep. The Good rope/chain was plug and play, that sealed the deal for me.
