Would this report below be a reason to NOT go take S.R. 310 out in the N.Y. and Long Island N.Y. waterways for delivery purposes driven by a certified M.M. captain from point A to point B???

W winds 15 to 20 kt with gusts up to 30 kt...becoming NW 10 to 15 kt with gusts up to 25 kt this afternoon. Seas 2 to 4 ft.

Those are not ideal conditions. Predictions like that leave a lot of room for the actual weather to be either far better or worse than the prediction. If I were the delivery captain, I would wait this one out. Its not my boat. I am not 100% certain of its current condition, seaworthyness, or capabillities at this point in time. The weather as predicted is ugly at best. Docking a large boat in 30 knot winds in a location that I am not famliar with, and when I have no idea of what maneuvers I would need to be performing to get it in a slip when I got there doesn't sound like a stress free day to me. If I saw a better forecast for a different day in the near future, I would pass on the delivery for today.

Does he have a suggestion for an alternate day when the forecast is better?

How far is it between points A and B?

Thanks

The alternate day would be monday, this is for mondays below

Mon
NW winds 10 to 15 kt with gusts up to 25 kt. Seas 2 to 3 ft.

Between A and B ??? not sure

i can only say from [A] NORWALK CONN to CHELSEA N.Y.C. and then to [C] LINDENHURST L.I. NY.

Forgot about C

That's a good trip. I think Monday is a better call.

Sucks waiting for delivery, eh?

Shoot... If it were my boat, I'd be wanting him to make the trip when the seas were 1' or less, and wind gusting to 3 knots.

I thought you said in another post the MM had already winterized the boat. If not, I would not take the boat out in those conditions, been there, done, that, not pretty!

PS. Are you sure they are not going to trailer her to your location? That would make more sense this time of year, and this is exactly what they did for me when I purchased mine.

Yes.it was winterized , but they said its not about the cold to determine the trip schedule, its the wind......

The most recent weather here says sunny, warme,r less wind..

I'm told its up to the captain....if he's not happy with conditions then its a NO GO
im hoping of course for a go.......

NO!! IM SURE THEY WILL DRIVE IT....NOTHING WAS SAID ABOUT A TRAILER..
THEY AT M.M. SEEM VERY CONFIDENT...... ITS DONE ALL THE TIME IN THIS TIME OF YEAR THEY SAY...

If the boat has been “winterized” they cannot put it in the water and start the engines without de-winterizing…. That is why I asked. If they bring her up by water, then they have to pull her and winterize again.

YES, they said they would de- winterize will have to pull her upon her destination, and then as i understand it from M.M they will start addressing the survey repairs...

If you have signed the papers, it is your boat. All and any damage is on you. You do have insurance on it,don't you? It is a long time between now and spring. What is the hurry. You should be calling the shots.

I would rather have a Boat Hauler go pick it up and trailer it back home. If you factor in the fuel the boat would burn and the fact that you will need to re-winterize the boat once you get it to Lindenhurst, the cost is probably going to be about the same.

 Why bother at this point? Can't you simply leave it where it is since it is winterized and bring it down in the Spring? You are not going to use it over the Winter anyway...

Since you asked the question, it's important for you to know for your own experience that wave height is only one of the factors that would determine whether to stay at the dock. Wind/wave direction relative to your intended course is also at the top of the list- four foot following seas (with a long period) are a breeze. A headsea with tightly stacked four footers can pound your fillings out...

Also, is the wind blowing onshore, or offshore? It's the fetch over the water that builds seas. I can go boating a mile off the beach with 30 knot winds as long as it's out of the East.

I have made this crossing many times and those forcasts are no problem at all. Don't worry about it. An experienced captain will NOT pound your boat and will make a safe and gentle trip. That boat will be fine...Ric

Since the majority of my boating is in the Long Island Sound, i can say that this marine forecast isn't ideal but not too bad for an experienced Captain in that boat. If my family was on board though, we wouldnt be going out in those conditions. If it was just me and a few of my boating buddies, it would just be a snotty ride. Be safe out there :)

Since its just been bought and ready to be repaired as per survey, they want to get a jump on it now in the off season...

I can only speak from my experience with MM and specifically SS3. Each time I've taken delivery from them it was a few days to several weeks AFTER I signed the papers and closed the loan. I hate to tell you Bill, but you own that boat; it's covered under your insurance in the event of a casualty and by contract you are probably indemnifying MM for any loss that occurs while the boat is in their posession. The good news is they will likely stand up to any issues that occur while it's in their care that arise out of their actions....but if you closed a loan or registered the boat...it's legally yours not theirs.

:smt001 Thanks Brian.......i'm aware now...

bottom line??? i trust them at M.M SS3 to do the right thing...
