We are in the process of buying a 2001 Sea Ray 380 and upon sea trial (after structural inspection I might add) I noticed water coming into the bilge through the fibre glass that encapsulates the stern tube tunnel. After a new inspection and amazing advice from Club Sea Ray members here, we narrowed down the issue to poor cabisol patching from the Merritt island factory that apparently cut the stern tube holes too big.
we are having ours refurbished before sale completion including engine out as the fibreglass around the tunnel has also cracked apparently from a previous out of alignment issue putting vibration strain on the tunnel.
I thought I would share what to look for so other 380 owners can check there’s.
check for crazing in the gel coat around the exit point under the hull of the stern tubes, often give away is flaking anti foul. And check internally in the bilge for gel coat cracks around the tube tunnel.
