Good inexpensive handheld VHF radio

Myself and 4 neighbors bought a Humminbird vhf-5A about 8 years ago for $85 (i think). I still use that darn thing and it works great....it is jam packed with features also.....a little outdated in that it is larger in size, but, heck, when I bought it, I thought it would be a throw-a-way......

I have the predecessor to the Standard HX 270 and I keep wanting to upgrade it to a smaller, lighter handheld with the alkaline battery option, but the darn thing won't quit working and I'm from the "if it ain't broke ; don't fix it " school of thought . While I'm not abusive, I can honestly say this radio is close to bullet proof. Its been kept dry, but its been dropped so many times that there isn't much paint left on the case.

When the time comes, the replacement will be a Standard Horizon.

I have a Uniden Voyager. Owned now for 3 years. Had charger replaced once. Went bad. The built in lith-ion battery is the best. Last long time. Gone a entire year on one charge. It has about 7-10 mile range and I am satisfied with it. Got it for 150 bucks when west marine matched a on line on sale price.

Lokks like I'll go with the Standard Horizon HX270. I don't need anything fancy, Just somthing to call for help if I need to.

Maybe someday I'll need it to call for a bridge open :smt017

I picked up a West Marine VHF 150 last year for $149. It worked out great. Clear reception and holds a charge for a long time.

I had a $99 Atlantis before ... I don't recommend the Atlantis. reception wasn't great and eventually the battery wouldn't take a charge.

Boatersworld has a Christmas special. Use Google to check out. They will give you 20 dollars off your order plus free shipping on orders over 50 dollars. The instructions are on there website. I just used this offer to buy a fixed mount VHF for my summer trips to Hilton Head, Beufort, and Panama.

Have a good day
