Hi,
I have a 1988 268 with about two inches free play in my outdrive(gimbal ring wear). I took it to a shop and they said it was ok for awhile depending on use. I plan on doinga transom replacement(Ugh). I was quoted about a thousand to replace the ring while the engine is out.I priced the parts at 500 new. I wondered if this is a good estimate . Or should i wait till it realy needs itand fix it while on boat.

The ring is expensive. If it has that much slop in it your steering is adversely affected more than you probably realize...get it fixed. Replace the swivel shaft bushing and seal while your at it....it is a known leaker. If your budget is really tight the rings can be repaired for less money (new collar welded in).

I had about two inches steering side to side play in my steering to gimbell ring joint. I retorqing the clamp bolts tightened mine right up. If your play is at the same joint, perhaps you might want to try retorqing to get it by till major repair time.

When doing so you'll want to loosen some first and then take them down easy, letting things find there natural seating positions.

Also with some searching you'll find on this site "gimbell ring replacement how too" You'll see there the bolts I’m referring too. Hope this helps some. ...Ron
