so i finally get this thing running like a top, and now its time to fix my drive. the gimbal has been making noise when turning all season so it was time to replace. pulled with a 10/lb hammer for hours, soaked in wd40, and hammered some more. i finally got the bearing to turn sideways and the center came out. now the race is stuck in there. how in the hell do i get that out.
i read you can drill it out, but i cant get a drill in there. i also read that iff you can break it into pieces it should fall out.

whats the best way without messing up the housing. its 70 here in VA and id love to get back on the water.

If you havent destroyed the outer race, reinstall the bearing and use a gear /axel puller

theres no way i can get the bearing back into the race.......trust me its not going to happen. after i die grind it. will it collapse into it self or will i still need to pry and hammer to get it out. also, do i need to pre gease the bearing or do i fill it up with the zerk after i intall it..

speaking of install. do yall use a press or a 2x4 and a heavy hammer?

They have pullers to take that out. I have may Snap On puller set from my Automotive days. Most part stores would rent them to you. 2X4 is not going to do it. It would be easy if you listen.

You need to learn how to install it . Not following the directions and using the correct tool with destroy the bearing. If you need detailed photos , just ask. I`m sure we can post them for you.
Since the bearing was removed you need to :
1 Find a puller to grab the rear of the carrier to remove it.
2 Drill a few 1/2 holes in the carrier spaced about an 1 inch apart and remove the small section to relieve pressure. The remaining section should just pop out.
You will need a tool to install it correctly or you will damage the bearing.

I would appreciate pictures and directions for installing.

This link is fairly well done but he dosent explain the part about the slots. The bearing can be installed in both directions, but as he says you can replace the bearing by turning it sideways to remove it. What he leaves out is the part of having the grease groove in the carrier line up with the grease hole in the bearing.
Originally mercruiser said you could replace just the bearing IF THE BEARING DID NOT SPIN IN THE CARRIER. Later revised it to replace it as a unit with the slots facing in.
The installing tool exerts the installation force on the carrier NOT the bearing.Listen to the sound of the hammer blows. There sort of "hollow" untill the bearing is fully seated with a more "solid" sound. Failure to seat it fully will cause the U joint to hit it.
Google "how to install mercruiser gimbal bearing" for more videos.

Thanks that is helpful. I have a Volvo drive an the bearing is in much further then on a Merc. I just don't know how I am going to line up the grease hole with the grease fitting. I have a alignment tool with a bearing driver but not sure how I am going to make sure the bearing doesn't turn when sliding it into place.

the bearing really dosent turn .Once you start the bearing `s carrier it should be tight .And the bearing will not turn in the carrier. Only the inner race might turn and thats a non issue.
Always use the last link for pics in rooms.
