GHS swim platform on 2006 40 Sundancer

I called them and spoke with their towing department and was told "once he used specialized tools (electric pump)) it became a salvage operation and not a tow. Tow Boat US would not help further.

WOW!!!! It must differ by area. I had a similar problem. Beached the boat and Boat US used a100 GPM gas pump to keep me afloat during the tow. No extra charge beyond what went to the tow boat captain.

I've never had first hand experience with this ( I have BoatUS towing coverage, but have never used it), but I though it was supposed to be clearly agreed on between the towboat captain and the "towee" captain whether it would be a salvage or towing operation. Before any lines where placed on the boat. Here is an excerpt from the BoatUS website http://www.boatus.com/towing/salvage-p2.asp

Since the same marine assistance company often provides both towing and salvage services, it is essential that the boat owner reach an understanding with the marine assistance provider before action is taken, cautions Jerry Cardarelli, BoatUS Vice President of Towing Services. BoatUS Towing Service Providers are required to inform the captain of a boat before beginning any work if the procedure is salvage, not towing. If this isn't possible due to wind and sea conditions, the towing company should tell the captain as soon as possible.
However, boaters should not assume they will always be told. Boaters should always ask whether the job is towing or salvage before they accept a tow.

Sometimes you just have to apply the laws of common sense and call BS on this type of activity. It's truly predatory and opportunistic. I hope your insurance company digs their heels in.

Sumpin' ain't right.

I would call Boat US directly. That seems nuts for what they did

We have had these discussions before and no one ever likes the admiralty laws concerning salvage but they are what they are. We cannot change them. Frank has previously posted a tow agreement to ascertain exactly the agreement concerning towing or salvage.
