So new pool being installed and they just finished the gunite and told me to call PG&E (utility company) so they can install a bigger gas meter for the spa heater. No problem, right…
They load calc my needs and say the gas line from the street is not big enough cause in my neighborhood they feed 2 homes from each branch and since my neighbor already has a pool heater he is using most of the capacity so now they will need to pull a new larger gas line 200+ feet to my house and at my expense of course.

You have a boat….you shouldn’t need a pool…this is your fault :)

I somewhat agree. I am fortunate that my wife has always been fine with any toys / hobbies I have ever wanted or done and she has always wanted a pool which I have to ask why when we have the best pool with the boat. Well I finally gave in and agreed to the pool.

Shouldn’t the neighbor pay half? He gets a pass because he was first?

No….you’re all in ….you gave in.

First and foremost, it's PG&E. So if ANY thing needs to be done, it's at the standard "after we fricked up and killed a bunch of people" charge. Your not the only one I'm hearing of these things. So if they are wanting to up the service size, that means your in a low pressure area.

Might look into a solar heater on the roof of the house. Be a lower cost in the long run. And there is no worries about the gas bill.

It is a 400,000 btu heater for the spa. I am tempted to have a propane tank set and change the heater to LP

Any estimates on the cost on the new line? $15k? Does pool need to be heated? California, right? Isn’t always the perfect temp in Cali. Least that’s what us East Coasters think?

The heater is primarily for the hot tub and yes early estimate is approx 15k

That's not that bad. I had a boss hit a line and it cost him $62k. That was a 2" high pressure. When he hit and ripped out a 8" high pressure it cost him just over $2 million. And that one was funny. Made national news.

2" pressure is alot of gas and hope nobody takes a smoke break while waiting for the gas company.

Knew the line was there but miscalculated it’s exact location or was oblivious to its total existence?

400,000 btu spa heater. How many gallons is the spa? Last year, we installed a 200,000 btu heater in our inground pool. The pool is approx. 200,000 gallons. Heats it up to 90 plus in no time, and we are in central Wisconsin. I assume they are doing there gas calcs based on all your appliances running at the same time. You might want to take another look at the size of heater, you may be able to go quite a bit smaller.
