I got an email form the carl vince institute UGA with a survey attached funded by DNR. What it amounted to was they are thinking about taxing all pleasure boats a $20 tax on top of your registration fee to cover the cost of dredging the ICW. I did not fill out the survey they wanted a lot of personal information. I think this is junk. Why should a pleasure boater in north Ga, such as my self cover the cost of dredging Ga's section of the ICW when I don't use it. Let those who use (commercial shipping) it cover the cost. Good grief they want to tax us on grey water and now dredging.Has anyone else seen this survey?

First I heard of it. Who sent it out? Why would they be asking for personal info??

Georgia boaters should not have to foot the bill for dredging the ICW for everyone else to use, they need to put some of those traffic light camers on the ICW and send a bill to every boat that passes through.

I have a considerable disdain for taxes to say the least, but, there are some 'causes' that I certainly wish to support. The ICW is one of them. The lack of maintenance and dwindling depth along the Eastern seaboard is rendering it useless in an increasing number of areas. I don't think Georgia should have to bear the entire brunt, but nor do I think $20 from each boater in GA represents the 'brunt'. I would think that finding a way to fund that by choice or use would be preferable to a tax, but I definitely see the need for funding.

The problem with government and targeted taxes is that they rarely get to the target they were meant for. There was a big stink here in Virginia about how the Governor recently robbed the fund from the fishing license fees to fund a different pet project of his...

Targeted tax money should be put in a Lock Box....just like Social Security (just ask Al Gore)and used only for the intended purpose...Yeah Right !!

I always thought the ICW was federal, why should we use state tax money? I'm sure we could take some funds from some of the dumb studies they do like the mating of bugs, etc. If they would just do the job and not spend some much on studies about doing the job they would have the funds to get it done.
