Hello 1989 Quicksilver 6.5 Genny on our 89 340 Dancer is in need of a new Raw water pump. Had it to pump specialist and could not get apart to replace parts (no parts can be found anyway) Did not want to break housing as it needs to go back on Genny. Apparently no inner parts or complete pump available through any marine or aftermarket suppliers in U.S or Canada. The Genny is a Quicksilver 4 Cylinder Nissan(60 HP.) with Generac electrics. This was original equipment in 1989. I'm thinking on adding a 12 volt Sureflow pump Fused and switched to the raw water intake with a switch that would be turned on prior to starting Genny. The pump would need to draw approx. 5 Gallons per min to circulate through the heat exchanger in the Genny. I will install old pump and pully back on the Genny so it will just free wheel without having to go to a different size belt. I have had no luck after many hours of looking and calling all over the place. Does anyone know of a supplier or should I go to plan B and install new pump. Im happy with plan B but need some input. The old pump needs new seals and bearings. I replaced the A/C circulating pump this year and will probably go with the same kind of pump Thanks in advance Steve.

There are several folks who have done this. You don't need to start the pump before the generator engine. You could just power the pump directly from the output of the generator (alternator - 120VAC) so that it's running any time the engine is.

If you can't get the old pump apart, how are you going to get the old impeller out of it? If you run it with that impeller without water, it will burn up. Also, the seals in there likely use the water to keep them cool and they probably won't like running very long without water.

Did you inspect the pump to see who it's actually made by? I'm sure Quicksilver didn't make their own and just purchased something from Johnson or Sherwood or one of the other pump vendors. They probably have a version that superceded the NLA one you have.

If the old pump already has bad seals and bearings, how long do you think it's going to last just freewheeling?

The inspection plate which you remove to replace the impeller is on with 8 Screws which I have taken apart and removed impeller. There is no water going past the impeller when new so the pulley bearing is in a separate compartment within the pump and its turning on its own bearing (no cooling needed )which seems fine at this time. There is no load on the bearing just free wheeling with the pully. I will definitely keep an eye on the pully as to overheating but for the amount of time we use the Genny I'm hoping for success. The pump was leaking behind the impeller thus the need to do new seals. I did talk to a company in Penn. that had a A/M pump but wouldn't promise my pulley would fit, and it needed to be shimmed to properly line up the pully to the engine main pully. I didn't want to go that route so I'm hoping my plan will work. Thanks a bunch Steve.

That's the company I was referring to in above thread. they were very helpful but did say there could be an issue with the pully. I haven't completely given up on them but I do have the winter to keep looking. thx Steve.

Well, there's certainly a load on the bearing when you have a fan belt attached to the pulley and tensioned properly. There should be a shaft seal between the compartment where the impeller does its job and where the bearings sit. In most modern pumps that's a mechanical seal, similar to the 'dripless' shaft seals used on propeller shafts. Those need to be cooled and lubricated too.

I think to do away with the old pump and find a smaller v-belt for the engine along with the new water pump might be the best way to go. Fingers crossed.
