genny not pumping water

I had the boat pulled and bottom paint touched up. When we put it back in and run it on plane the the genny will not prime up. Changed impeller and it still will not pump. Cleaned strainer, there is water in the strainer but does not overflow with the seacock open. Any suggestions?

This happened to a neighbor after a bottom job. They inadvertently painted over the intake. You might check for the same.

Pull the hose off the seacock to make sure you didn't suck up something. Also check the hose between the seacock and strainer.

There is an air lock or pocket between the strainer and the pump. Take the boat out and run it at a fast idle with the generator sea cock open and then try to crank it. If that doesn't work you may need to force water into the generator inlet with a hose by taking the strainer lid off and shoving the hose up in the hose outlet to the generator with the hose running full blast while trying to crank the generator. Be careful, it is possible to force enough water in with the hose to get water in the engine thru the exhaust system. Its best to have a helper and do the cranking as you turn the hose on.

SOme of us have added a hose connection to the generator water circuit so priming the generator isn't a hassle. If I leave my boat out of the water more than a week, I have to prime the pump....but if I idle around to my slip after launching the boat and then start the generator, it primes itself.

i found they left tape over the inlet on the bottom of the boat. Now i have to get a new impeller and maybe that will fix it. Does the impeller turn clockwise or counter clockwise on the kohler 5k. I always thought it turned clockwise and that is the way i install my impellers but the life of the impeller seems short.
