Is the genny battery charged by the main charger or is it charged by the genny itself when it is running ?

I tried to start my genny this morning and the battery is dead. It is 3 years old. I don't use the genny often, last time was 5-6 weeks ago. Before buying a new battery maybe I should try to charge it with a separate charger(after disconnecting its cable), but if it was already connected to the main charger, I will replace it now.

Boat is a 1995 Sundancer 370, genny is a Westerbeke 7 kw.

Thank you.

On our boat the generator is started from one of the engine battery pairs, can't remember which one though.

I have a designated battery for the gen that is charged via gen battery charger. There is a fuse at the control box for the battery charger, check to make sure it's still good.

The generator charges the battery and the converter also charges it. Check that the fuse is good. There should be an in-line fuse somewhere within 6" of the battery.

Best regards,

Glad you signed your post Big Al. Didn't know if your username Bigal was Big al or Bi gal. Just trying to get the right mental picture.

Here's another thought. You wrote that the battery was 3 years old. A wet cell battery that you have to fill may be shot after three years. Don't know which kind you have. I used to put a less expensive wet cell brand in my prior 330, but they would be toast after 2 years.

Thank you for the information. I will check for the fuse. The battery is a wet cell battery, (a less expensive type....). It is also quite possible that it is dead.

PS: Frank, it is Big Al. My name is Allan.

I fixed it this morning. The battery was dead.

Thank you again for the information.

The "charging" fuse holder on my genny control box is broken (part is ordered to fix). Without this fuse in place, if I start the genny and turn the converter on, are my batteries being charged then?
