Was running my generator the other day, a few seconds after it fired up I heard some belt squeaks. Thought I would give it a few seconds to clear up while doing so I was looking for water to start flowing never saw any so I killed it quickly. Total run time +- 20 seconds.

Opened the engine bay, I guess I let the smoke out of something! Didn't have time to investigate so I let it be for a few days. Finally got the time today to go see how much money I get to spend this week on boat maintenance and it wasn't as bad as I thought. Smoke came from the sea water pump belt which is no biggie however the sea water pump no longer chooches. Pulled it and went back to my work shop amazingly the impeller is still in great condition, wear plates still look good, inner seal is crusty and... inner bearing seized. Ordered some new bits for a total of $66.00 - got off easy this time. I debated getting the whole rebuild kit for 250 however I didn't need half the parts as I already have most of what I need.

Your title had me thinking the whole generator fried! Glad you got easy.

Haha, yeah sorry. I seriously thought it was shot for the last few days. I guess the real test will be when I get the parts and run it again.

Yep...generator not up in smoke. Glad the boat gods smiled on you.

When my generator has issues, I'm giving you a call! Even if it's only for good luck.

There is a guy on my dock with a 2007 340 that can not keep the Kohler gennie running. It shuts down after 20 minutes or so.

2 years of various mechanics, calls to Sea Ray, calls to Kohler, you name it.....it shuts down.

He is pulling it out and putting in a new one.

Glad your issue was light on the old wallet!

I just took my Westerbeke's water pump off for the first time in 8yrs (370hrs) since it was starting to drip onto the pulley. Instead of ordering a rebuild kit, I had a new impeller and seal already and took it to a local machine shop. They rebuilt it with new bearings and my seal for $40!! The old impeller amazingly still looked good, but I replaced it anyway and kept the old as a spare. Not much difference in the amount of water being pumped as before the rebuild, but I know it's good now - water in the bearings isn't good for long term reliability.

Glad I didn't buy the $180 rebuild kit and do it myself!

Sounds like an air bubble in the closed cooling system.

I think there is a recall out on that year. I'm still waiting for the tech on mine. It works fine but Koehler put out a recall because the generator can overheat and not shut itself down… I guess before going on fire.

I bet his cooling system is clogged.... He should pull the heat exchanger and look to see if its clogged.....
