I have a 2008 280 Sundancer. Last summer the generator kept turning on at random times without me turning it on. We kept getting calls from the dock saying that they had to turn our generator off. At the end of the summer after being worked on by the service department, it stopped. probably because it was then winterized. This summer it started again. Has anyone had this problem and if so how do i fix it?

Someone else posted this and I believe the generator has a setting that turns it on automatically, for example if you are a mooring buoy without power. A search may help.

That seems pretty dangerous unless you have the blower running at all times. Good way to get a boat to explode.

Thanks, I did a search and nothing came up. Also, the blower turns on automatically when the generator comes on.

Your generator must have an Automatic Generator Start Control installed. Check your control panel in the cabin and look for something like this:

First, to answer your question, we do not have this problem.

I would consider this a serious issue and I would want it fixed or fix it myself.

Until I have it fixed I’d pull the positive battery terminal connection that connects to the generator to prevent any possibility of a spontaneous engine start.

It sure sounds like a short in the start switch, either the built in one or the remote one in the cabin.

I’d contact your boat dealer or the generator manufacturer, explain the issue and see what they say.

Do you leave your generator battery on all the time? If it is turned off, it should never do that. Regardless, it should not do what you are describing with or without the battery on.

You probably have the Kohler 5ECD genset with the 2" digital remote gauge. It needs to have the digital controller reprogrammed by a Kohler dealer. This should solve the problem.

I'd read either here or on another site of the same problem- sounds like what was said above. Their gen was programmed to start automatically when the battery voltage dropped to a certain level in order to recharge the batteries.
