Generator Surging & running rough

Broughtabouy, the other plug is on the other side of the generator. You will need to find the location by feel, unless you have a small handheld mirror.

Xdiver1, my 2007 240 had a Westerbeke generator installed by SeaRay. The trade off is no waste holding tank. But for us, the generator was more important. We just added capacity to the carry out holding tank.

The "other" plug is located as a mirror image on the opposite side of the engine. It is a PITA the first time, but you will get better. Getting the cap off is harder than getting the plug out, but back in is the opposite. Put a rubber hose on the new plug to help hold it as you feed it back to the hole.

BTW, the NGK plugs are pre-gaped, don't mess with them.

My experience and my techs say that if you use the boat year round the ethanol issues are almost non-existent. However, I agree that if you layup a boat it produces big problems. When the ethanol and gas start to separate it absorbs water at an increasing rate and becomes highly corrosive and even more so to aluminum.

Hi All,

Okay, the new plugs solved the rough running problem. Reminder, it's a 7.5 kw Kohler. Now, a new problem. It now runs for 5-10 seconds, and then shuts down with a "LOC" error message. Time after time! BUT, twice now in the past month, I've been able to get it to run for, on one occasion, 3-4 hours, and another, 45 minutes. Totally random! Coolant level is fine. Impellor is fine-plenty of water pumping through. I even checked it. All ribs are there. There are a couple of sensors in the water system. Any thoughts on if one of these is cooked? Or, is it a deeper problem? Any ideas?

I had s very Similar issue with my 5Kw. It would runn fine for a minute or so then shut down. SAME code "LOC" (which is loss of coolant if you didnt know). Once I found this out I added coolant only to find it all would be pumped intto my resivior after it shut down... After talking to a bunch of good peeps I found out that these units have to be "burped" (i know it sounds wierd but it worked...) her is waht you do...

There is a small bleader bolt on the top of the manifold (atleast there should be...) open that then open the main fill cap... Squeez the coolant hoses with your hands so that the coolant moves around.. your hoping to free up any traped air bubles... after a few squeezes which feels pointlessand dumb as your doing it start the unit and fill it via the main fill cap as its running slowly allowing it to tak in as it runs... shut the unit dowm once the fcoolant comes out of the breather prot that you opened earlier. top is off ,make sure your resivior is at the correct level, close it up and let it run.... I also had to replace my cap due to aweek spring but you may not have to do that... hope this works..

I have also heard of this trick hoeweve i have not tried it yet... Fill the resivior bottle up to the top, start the unit and let the safety shut it down apparently the coolant will siphin back into he unit clearing the air lock... again i havent tried this just read it in multiple places.

Check your oil. It will shut down for low oil just as you describe. When checking, do not screw dipstick all the way down (if it is a screw down like on the 5kw). That gets folks all the time, just rest it on top to see where oil level is.

I'm pretty sure the oil level is okay. I changed it myself a couple months ago. And wouldn't this produce a different error code? I'm wondering if it could be a bad sensor. There are a couple that I can see in the loop. Is it possible to test those by jumping the leads?
