So I have read many times about fuel hoses collapsing, I did not realize raw water hoses are susceptible to this also. I thought I would share.
I have a Kohler 5E like many of you. Ran it last weekend and it overheated. I change the impellers every year .... Just because. Though I only have 6 hours since the change I assumed the impellers had failed so today I pulled it and sure enough the enclosure was a mess.
Changed the impellers and put in a new one, did the normal flushing and so on ...... Nothing, not a drop of water out of the exhaust.
So I started the process looking for the blockage, sea strainer cleared but not bad, hose from the pump to the exchanger cleared, hose from the strainer to the pump, cleared. Tried the Genny again .... Still not a drop.
I decided to look again at the through hull and strainers, strainer lid off with seacock open - not a drop. At this stage I should have checked the hose ..... But instead I donned a snorkel and goggles with a long air tube and went under the boat, cleaned the through hull and it looked just fine.
Tried again - not a drop of water.
So - back in the bilge, I took off the 18" piece of 3/4 ID marine grade hose from the seacock to the strainer. Sure enough a great flow into bilge when the seacock was opened. It turned out the hose had delaminated inside - it looked perfect outside - and I hope you can see in the picture it formed a bladder that completely blocked the hose just an inch from the seacock.
Anyway - new 80cents piece of hose and we are all good again.
I am going to replace all the hoses I can get easy access to.
