Generator rough running

The Koehler 5E-BBG generator in my 2003 320DA starts ok. But then (with or without load) gets a low, violent, rough rumblethat comes and goes. When under load, I get pops from the gen, too. Sounds like it's misfiring. Are these symptoms of dirty/old plugs? Or a restricted fuel issue? Something else?

Yes, change plugs first. Kohlers are picky about their spark plugs, try that first always.
