Has anyone installed a generator on a boat that didn't originally have one? I would appreciate hearing how it was done and if it was worth it. We have a generator-less 320 and are thinking about adding one. Thanks in advance.

I’m glad to hear you want to “install” a generator. I can only speak through second hand knowledge, hopefully someone here that knows more will chime in. If you are looking at a new generator, spend the extra money to get one that is 1800 RPM and has a sound shield (if it would fit). Also, whatever muffler system you get, make sure it is a good one, it will allow you to enjoy the benefits of having a generator, without the noise.

As for mounting, I think you have space for and factory was installing them in the back of engines, wedged up against the transom. You will have to make sure you have enough clearance with your engines and thier exhaust systems, as well as the obvious, water intake for the genny and properly designed exhaust.

Frankly, I would have a professional do it. There is so many different issues they would know how to handle. It expensive, but it is worth it. Sorry I cant be more help.

The secret here, if there is one, is to use the same equipment, location etc that the factory did on your model/year boat. They have already done the engineering so you don't have to invent the wheel. In fact, some models even have the generator wiring harness already in place but tucked away on the boat. This isn't a cheap addition, but one well worth the effort. Expect the cost to be $5-$7,500 depending upon whether you use a new or remanned generator.

Christo15,
Did you proceed with the generator install?
The person that wants to buy my 320 was asking about installing a genny and wanted to know if the wiring harness was pre-installed by the factory.
Good question, anybody know?
