Wardy, I fear you have opened Pandora's box.

Speechless.....I would highly discourage you from going the honda generator route, you can do a search on it as to learn why.
It sounds pretty bad from what you are saying. What do I search for as far as research? I have read alot about the hondas and they seem to be a quality and quiet machine. Ive owned numerous boats, ski and fish but never an apartment on water so all of the luxuries of having power, head and berths is all new to me so any experienced knowledge and guideance would really help. Thank you!

Oh great lol

I don't know why everyone picks on Honda generators, ANY brand GAS generator used on a boat is dangerous and yes, even the one that are built in to the boat. I really comes down to managing risk but when I had my gas genny's on the 320 or 280, I hated using them when sleeping. Just dangerous.

So all together its just a bad idea?

Dang... I thought it was only the Honda? that's why I bought a Ryobi. No really I don't condone using a gas generator on a boat. There are some who do and that is their choice. I won't tell them not to nor will I say it is ok to do it. There are other concerns besides CO poisoning. Electrical bonding issues. Spilled gas etc...

You will get a lot of opinions on generators here, most of them are just that opinions, not based on facts.

Except for those pesky articles on people dying from CO poisoning, or being electrocuted...those are not opinion, those are concrete evidence.

Show me one of those articles where it was a portable generator on a swim platform.

I don't know... I think I'm going back over to the "day drinking" thread and hang around.

I wonder if these threads are real or boat savvy trollers looking for a laugh?

Enjoy. (Can't wait for the rationalization process to begin.)

Here's the whole store.
http://www.theguardian.com/uk/2013/may/24/carbon-monoxide-lake-windermere-boat

It went on: "A 'suitcase'-type, portable, petrol-driven generator had been installed in the motor cruiser's engine bay to supply the boat with 240V power. The generator had been fitted with an improvised exhaust and silencer system which had become detached from both the generator and the outlet on the vessel's side. As a result, the generator's exhaust fumes filled the engine bay and spread through gaps in an internal bulkhead into the aft cabin where the mother and daughter were asleep.

Not on a swim platform but in the bilge. It should be obvious that putting any generator in an enclosed space and then trying to get the exhaust out is far more dangerous than having the generator and exhaust already in the open.
How many of you with generators installed in the bilge inspect the exhaust on a regular basis?

Sometimes I wonder too...

Wardy549 looks legit though, he's got pictures:

Wow really?? People do that??? No, im legit. Picked this boat up with an 07 dual axle trailer for 2500.00. Got it home and it started that night. Now im in the process of bringing it back to as new as possible. Ive owned numerous boats over the years but never a boat I could spend days or weeks on over night. So i am wanting to learn anything and everything to make her perfect and as sound as possible. As you see in my pictures I am devoted to making her beautiful.
so please understand i need expert advice.
so far thank you for responses
