I'm working on a generator 4.5 bcgb westerbeke. He pulled it 2 years ago put of an 02 310 dancer. I have one question what is this white strainer looking piece on the hose.

On a raw water hose? That house goes from heat exchanger outlet to exhaust elbow inlet. So I just have to make sure that's up higher then the motor? I was thinking it was some kind of anti siphon valve

i believe anti-siphon valve is the same thing as a vacuum breaker.
The why and where they installed it? I can't answer that but I believe they are supposed to be on the exhaust water side to prevent sea water from being sucked back into the gen.
