I was trying to fire up the gen for the first time this season. It seemed like the starter was not spinning fast enough to fire up the motor. I assumed that the battery was weak and swapped it out for a new one. Still have the same problem. Could it be the starter? Seems like there is not enough starting RPMs for it to fire. If you continually hold the start button, the starting RPMs actually become weak to the point where it stops. Any ideas? The gen is a Westerbeke. Thanks

Sounds like the starter has flattened the battery from continous cranking and starter damage may have occurred. How long was it cranked before it quit?

Gas or diesel? The completion of your signature to include the year, model, and engine make and model in your boat would be useful. The diesel 9KW Onan in my 420 has a similar issue right now and I'd be happy to help--but gas or diesel would be a useful start point.

Based on this statement "I assumed that the battery was weak and swapped it out for a new one. Still have the same problem. Could it be the starter? Seems like there is not enough starting RPMs for it to fire." I assume that the srating RPMs for the starter were weak right from the point when you hooked up the new or freshly charged battery. If that's the case, I'd say the starter is the problem. It sounds like an issue I hand two years ago with my lawn tractor. If you decide to get a new starter, get it from the reputable source. This will give you a chance to return it, just in case if turns out to be a different issue.

Alex.

Thanks for the input guys. The gen is a gas Westerbeke. Spoke to a tech today and he thinks the motor is bound up from fogging this winter. He suggested to take the plugs out and cycle the starter and blow the oil out before trying to start.
