Hey everyone,

I am picking up my new (new to me) 2002 320 SD tonight and I have a 3 item punch list of things that I should attend to sooner than later as found in the survey. None of the items are critical which is nice. One item on the list is battery terminal covers for the Westerbeke generator battery terminals. Is this something that was never on the generator? The boat was very well maintained so i find it hard to believe that they were removed and discarded for some reason. Can anyone shed some light on this topic? I definitely want to be safe but if the manufacturer didn't put the covers on was there a reason for it?

In case you are itching to know the other 2 items on the list and have any thoughts...

  • Propeller shaft log seals need to be replaced (should be a backup seal on the shaft ready to be slid down and into place)
  • Windlass foot switch should be properly rebedd

Thanks!

Simple fixes at least. The battery terminal covers have nothing to do with the generator, it just happens to be the generator battery that is missing them. They are just rubber and you can most likely get them at a decent auto parts store or marine supply.

From USCG Auxillary Vessel Safety Check (VSC) form:

b. Safe Electrical and Fuel Systems:

The electrical system - Must be protected by fuses or manual reset circuit breakers. Switches and fuse panels must be protected from rain or water spray. Wiring must be in good condition, properly installed and with no exposed areas or deteriorated insulation. Batteries must be secured and terminals covered to prevent accidental arcing. If installed, self-circling or kill switch mechanism must be in proper working order. All PWCs require an operating self circling or kill switch mechanism.

so the battery for the generator would be one of my 4 batteries or is there a 5th?
