Re: gen problem

Hello, I have 1998 Sea Ray 400 Westerbeke as well. I have become quite the fixer of this baby. She and I have a love hate relationship.

Stupid questions first...
Is it pumping water?
Have you checked all the safety's? Water temp, oil pressure, exhaust temp, etc
How much do you have loaded on the genset when it does this? Loaded, semi-loaded, over-loaded
Does it do this with your water heater off or on? Or have you realized it?
Is it tripping the breaker on the genset or just shutting down?
Have you replaced the motherboard? Or is it the original?
Have you replaced the zinc?
Is there plenty of coolant in the overflow?
How old are your batteries?

We have had this issue a couple of times and you just gave to go down the diagnosis checklist. The last time it was a burnt diode on the motherboard. But another time it was the exhaust temp switch. After running for hours it got too hot and shut itself down. When it was cool it would restart. Now, the surging could possibly when your water heater is cycling. Your generator heats your water so you really don't need it on under power so leave it off and see if it's still surging the same.

Just a couple of things to consider.

Happy to help!!
