Good evening,
This summer my shifter did not work until I lowered the unit to cruise level. I just cranked her up with a water hose and the same thing, runs great but will not shift any direction other than I can pull her to neutral, outdrive up or down.
I removed the connections at the engine, the handle moves freely and the cables move freely.
I attempted to move the cable going to the out drive by hand, does not move.
Looking at the out drive where the cable is on the out drive shifter, it does not move, it feels very tight at the upper part, coming down. The shifter coming from the lower part feels a little wobbly as I think it should.

So my question is, do I need to remove the lower unit out drive to see if the shifter cable is working, then check the out drive shifter handle to see if it works?

Any suggestions?
Thanks,

Glenn

Did you just experiance an overheat? you may have mented the shift cable solid

Good evening I removed my lower unit in neutral and now cannot get it to shift help please!!

Assume you have an Alpha ? There is a coupler the shift shaft on the out drive slides into when you install the drive. It moves between 12 o’clock F and 2 o’clock R. Drive and shifter need to be in F when the drive is removed / installed. You will need to remove the drive (don’t worry about the shifter right now), the with drive off, put shifter in F and make sure drive is also in F (shift shaft at 12 o’clock). Then re-install drive - I always tied the prop with a bungee to keep it in F while installing.

Yes it’s alpha one gen two it’s the port drive it looks like the upper housing goes from 11 for forward 10 for neutral and 9 for rev at one point I got it on and was able to shift from forward to neutral and then rev but I had to get it to about 3/4 throttle in rev for it to engage in rev so I took it apart again and now I’m getting stuck as mentioned previously

If it's the counter rotating drive then you put the shift in R to remove/install. Sounds like it is since the shift shaft on the drive moves between 10-12 vs 12-2. It's pretty simple, with the drive off, you can see the coupler on the transom side that the shift shaft on the drive slides into. As far as on engaging reverse until you give it some throtter, that's a lower shift cable adjustment -- do that at the engine after you get the drive on correctly. There is a pretty precise adjustment procedure, but it's not hard.

These doc's should help. Page 79-80 talk about the shifter during installation.
