I have Twin Disc Trans coupled to 3196"s and they call for 40 weight oil. Is this regular engine oil or something special?

Yes, the 40 wt. oil is your regular engine oil. When I had my first annual service done last fall (first diesel) I was surprised to learn that from my mechanics. In fact, they said the oil looked so clean there was no need to change it.

Jack if in doubt (I assume that you are seeing oil and not ATF in the trans) contact the trans manufacturer directly - particularly if the boat is new to you.
Both Caterpillar and their tech told me to use SAE30 and they were both WRONG. When I contacted ZF-Hurth the trans manufacturer they said that ATF with Dextron II or III (and gave me several other options) is the only option. When I posted this issue last year there were several expert posts (incl. FWebster) confirming that it would be a huge mistake to use SAE30 oil in my transmissions (Hurst model ZF80, now HSW800).
My advice: Despite the expertise available here on something this important, get the facts on fluids at the source and have the model/serial#'s ready when you call!

These are ZF gears- mine (and the OP's) are Twin Disc; surely there can be a difference by manufacturer.
The manual (got it) for the Twin Disc 507 gear specifies SAE 30 or 40 wt engine oil, if you have a different model you should check.
