Hi guys, I was wondering for those who do their own maintenance, have you purchased or made a pump better than those that you screw onto the gear lube bottles to change oil in your drive. I had a he** of a time in the fall. The one I have had for a few years finally blew apart. Although I did have a spare, it seems they have cheapened them up a bit with no clamps on the tubing at all, along with the adapter for the drive being plastic. Would love to hear what others might use.

buy a small weed sprayer. put proper fittings on. pump up pressure. pull trigger until oil comes out

get a metal quick connect for hose less mess. a lot easier to take out to put plug screw in

I am glad this was posted - the merc pump feels like it needs 100 pumps. This one looks better!

Thanks, it looks similiar to the merc / quicksilver pump. Have you had any issues with the tubing comming off at all ?

Jason, my original pump has that metal screw on connector, after a few years of use, the hose slipped off this year and made a mess. I like the idea of the gallon jugs. Have you had good luck with that pump ?

The garden/weed sprayer idea looks interesting also Ron.

The pump has worked fine for the last 4 seasons. Didn't pump quite as well the last season so I may just order another one with my next lube purchase since they are relatively cheap. Not sure how yours is but this one just has a compression clamp holding the hose to the metal fitting. It seems like it could be replaced with a wormgear clamp if it slipped off.

You can make those little pumps a slight bit more reliable by putting a couple of zip ties on the two ends of the tubing, but you're still stuck with only pumping what seems like 1/2oz at a time. I do winterizing on the side and that's just not going to cut it. I made this about 4 or 5 years ago (holds 1 gallon). If you don't get a pump sprayer made for oils (most are not and will deteriorate), be sure to contact the manufacturer and get replacement "viton" seals. Most of the time, they come with regular rubber or something that's not meant for petrol products. The quick connectors (chrome plated brass) both have automatic shut-offs (when disconnected the flow stops immediately. I used Oeticker clamps for a better seal, but you need a tool for those.

That is a nice setup Dennis! The quick disconnects with backflow prevention valves are the ticket!

The most I get is a drop or two that was left in the cavity. I don't even get too much coming out when I remove the piece from the drive. But the key is to let things settle a bit. I pump it in till the reservoir bottle gets about 1/2" to 1" in it, then I disconnect the pump side. I'll go and do other things while the pressure in the drive settles out - the level in the bottle will continue to rise while that happens. I usually give it a good 15 minutes or more. By that time, it's less messy when I remove the drive-side connector. I lose maybe an ounce.

Dennis, that is a nice st up. Do you have an outlet for that oil rated pump sprayer and quick connects by chance.

for those that don't want to bother making their own pump from a garden sprayer i found this company that sells them already made.....

I would not recommend this, I did order one of these at the end of January prior to this thread. I got a notification saying it shipped UPS but it hasnt gone out yet, and of course they have been paid through Paypal. I have emailed and called, their voice mailbox is full.

Brian, sorry, I didn't see your question till just now. This container is from Motive Products and is marketed as a power brake bleeder. I have made similar setups for friends and have used a garden sprayer (I chose to use the Hudson brand as they are made here in the USA and they were easy to deal with to get the proper replacement seals) - but I replaced the seals so they would be compatible with petroleum. I also replaced the cheapie hose that comes with the sprayer. The shut-off fittings come from Colder Products (also available in plastic for less money than the chrome/brass). If memory serves, they are the LC series. The adapter to fit the gear case comes from Stevenson Instruments.
