Which of the engine gauges do most look at when on plane or not on plane,
I find my self fixated on all the gauges, but especially the temp gauge then the oil pressure, and sync gauge...

I'll bet that the overwhelming response will be Oil, water, volt & tach.

For me, (us small boat guys), the drive position & fuel level stay constant unless I'm moving them & the speedo is, in my opinion, unreliable at best. That being said, I keep a very close eye on my gauges. But only 4 are important.

I usually do a quick scan of all the gauges every 1-2 mins while on plane. I know the 'normal' level for all the gauges and on the scan look for readings that are either low or high.

Also nwo know if an alarm sounds to look at the system monitor panel immediately and throttle down until the cause is identified.

I actually saw my belt failing before it failed as the engine temp creep up as the pump circulation slowed. Of course I did not know it at the time....

I constantly scan my gauges with particular attention to the oil and temp.

Fixate? No. I do a scan just like they taught me when I was learning to fly.

I just do the scan but with the water depth we have around here I add the depth finder to the scan.

My fuel gauge is always exciting to watch

oil psi / temp at a glance then check them all every so often...

I agree. Always watching my depth gauge and looking out for other boaters. I figure I have alarms for everything else.

I watch them all...but the one I watch the most is the temp gauge. Mostly due to paranoia since it is reading about 10-15 degrees too high (about 175 at idle speeds and about 195 while on plane). I was told by my mechanic it indeed is running at the proper temp, but that the guage is just reading too high. It's been this way all year without change, so I am starting to feel better about it now, but I still watch it closely.

I scan them all, Its a habit from driving truck for 33yrs. :smt001.

Exactly the same situation for me. Temp gauge is reading high but engine temp is OK - but I watch it very closely anyway and scan all other gauges including depth. Gauge is on order..

I generally set the digital readout of the Smartcraft gauge to fuel flow when I am on plane so I can use it combined with engine RPM and GPS speed to tell when I've got her trimmed right. When I am off plane, I switch it over to depth.

I do quick scans of oil pressure and engine temperature a couple of times per minute.

I rotate amongst the following 3 things constantly when I am drivimg the boat:
  • Look at where I am going and what is going on around me.
  • Check the attitude of the bow, adjust trim if necessary.
  • Scan gauges.

    YES YES YES ....

BENNETT AC 3000 CONTROL DOES THAT FOR ME

  • Scan gauges.

    EVERY MOMENT....

Normal values on my boat are indicators are more or less straight up and down. I scan for position only and do it on a regular basis. If something is not straight up and down, I look at it more carefully.
