Gas Prices At August Record!

alnav:: When did this change? (not being a smart ass but I would like to know if there is actually something on paper) but your comment is almost letter for letter what AAFES states when asked (like a script)

From my 'source' (an AAFES manager here who is a good friend) they are not paying state tax of 0.69, she couldn’t confirm the not paying federal taxes, and the DoD picks up the haulers fee. They also don’t pay the NY fee of $1.50 a pack on cigs, but still 'charge it' (they don’t want to promote or facilitate the use of tobacco products in the Service).

Ive asked questions to the point of getting the 'keep going and we will call your Command and have them revoke your AAFES privileges'

Someone is hiding something... dont get me started on DECA (Commissary) and their 5% 'tax' on everything, and price fixing for paydays, and non paying of 'volunteer' workers.

SOMEONE is making money hand over fist, and screwing the Soldiers.

James, the statute that allows for taxation of fuel sales on federal property dates back to 1936 (Hayden Cartwright Act). Fortunately, during the debate on this and in ensuing court cases, taxation was not extended to most goods sold in exchanges and commissaries, so that's something of a benefit. I suspect that the tax accounting is done way above the level of the local managers since AAFES buys fuel in considerable bulk just like other large retailers. I think there are some taxation or other legal strictures around the sale of cigarettes that have been around for a while as well, even before smoking became as "incorrect" as it is now. When I was serving in ships, as soon as we got out of territorial waters, the store could sell completely untaxed cigarettes which were an order of magnitude cheaper than the current exchange or commissary (or local retailer) prices. But, as you note, there's now a DoDINST that limits the prices of both alcohol and cigarettes in an effort to "deglamorize" them.
There's a similar long history around commissary and exchange prices which has resulted in the formulas they have to use to apply mark-ups over cost. While I believe that overall both are still a better deal than going outside, the formulas limit discounts and wholesaler/provder incentives so that there are frequently items on sale outside where the price cannot be matched on base. If there are any bad zctors in this, I believe they are in congress and the lobbying arms of companies who want to limit competition; the local managers can only do what the laws/regs allow them to do. But, on the other hand, as I said, I think the overall result is favorable to folks with exchange/commissary privileges and that tends to bring up jealosy in the masses and attacks on the privileges that, while dormant for the last decade or so, rise up periodically to eliminate the benefit entirely.

alnav: well said!

Unfortunately I have only had BAD experiance with AAFES, seemingly everywhere. From in Germany when Gulf war part 2 kicked off and we deployed, AAFES setting up a cash register out back to charge $2.00 a box (that were previously free) until the CG threatened to make the PX an 'off limits establishment'

AAFES opening battery packs in Iraq and selling the batteries for $1.50 each, trying to get ME to pay AAFES because I happened to be the one who set up a private sat internet in the hootches in Afghanistan and they thought I was making money. Telling Soldiers that they were forbidden to shop at the Canadian Cantina because their cig's were $15 a carton versus the AAFES price of $23 for the SAME STUFF shipped in the same containers.

God forbid you take pictures inside a PX downrange... they will call the MPs in a heart beat!!

I agree 100% our (military) benifits are always on the chopping block because we ARE the 1% (i hate that phrase really) that volunteer to serve, and the other 99% don't understand the rights we -give up- in order to give them the right to complain about our free medical care, or we dont have to pay tax on that big screen!

Prices in our area for regular grade range from $3.69 at Costco to $3.89 at Tesoro. Mid Grade $3.82 at Costco to $3.99 at Tesoro. Premium is $3.89 at Costco to $4.09 at just about every other station.

I don't know what diesel is at the marina 'cause I haven't filled up in awhile. We (yacht club members) get a discount off the price shown on the pump.

All right... stopped for fuel again today and its $3.519? Wtf... maybe I should quit buying fuel everyday?

We get .10 off a gal at the marina also but its $4.45 for 89 w/o the discount. And the cars take super which is now $4.19 !!!!! our expedition was $104 to fill with 87 two days ago! Unbelievable

Left home this morning and the station down the road advertised regular for $3.42 a gallon. Came home this evening and it was at $3.85 a gallon. WTF?

I paid $4.79 a gal last Sunday on the north side of Shelter Island. The good news is due to the excellent weather we had I was getting 1.5mil per gal on the way back to the Great South Bay. In comparison I paid $4.19 about a month or so ago from the fuel truck that comes to my marina. That was the best I've seen all season.

Maybe it is not so bad...

I figure the high gas prices keeps the folks with no insurance off the road and the water, to some extent.

Fueled Aftica at $4.099 a gal. Not the best this year but not the worst I've ever paid. That was valvtech fuel by the way.

Fueling up later today....I will post my pain later tonight. I know the truck fuel jumped again yesterday from $3.58 to $3.90. The station owner and the news blame it on the storm and the lack of rain and corn. I'm sure Congress will step in and do another hearing to see if we are getting scammed

H'mmmm, let's see.

1 US gallon = 3.8L. Petrol on the marina is $2 per litre, so that's $7.60 per gallon.

Funny, there is no Australian voices on here complaining.

I used to pit crew for a guy who was one of the pioneers and leaders in off road racing in Australia. Back in the 80's there was a fuel crisis, V8's were a dirty word, Honda bought out the Zot, a 2 door car with a motorbike engine.

I have never forgotten his common saying in regards to fuel prices.

If you had to pay for air to breath, you would.

Honestly, my fuel cost is the smallest part of the yearly cost of having a boat in the water
