gas in cylinders -lots of it

Well, I'm still trying to identify all that crap on the Carver (Tiara) in Todd's photo. All I know so far is that all those fenders are probably worth more that his boat is........and, I wonder what's in the cabin?

Thanks for all the comments. I will definitely rebuild it before I take it back out.Where is a good place to get a rebuild Kit ( Weber )? Any tips on the rebuild ? ( I do have a merc manual that details rebuilding )

Well......it's a Bayliner and by the scumline on the port side it'd say he's a few pounds over limit.

On the bow is a truck's bed tool box, with two dock boxes on each side. He must be inspired by Deadliest catch because ...how many crab pots

I've ordered my kits from Mercruiser. They just relabel the OEM kits. When rebuilding a carburetor, the important things to remember is clean, tight, and precise. Clean the components well. Work in a clean area. Make certain everything is clean when you reassemble it. Use all new gaskets and seals. Disassemble everything so that you can replace the old gaskets. Measure all of the dimensions and clearances exactly. 3/32" doesn't mean 1/8" is good enough unless the tolerances clearly state +/- 1/32.

Best regards,
Frank

With all due respect Frank all I referred to was the fact that he was able to figure out the problem. I certainly wasn't commending his decision to run the boat afterwards.
I certainly respect your view and understand your firm ground on the matter since it is a safety related issue.
Now back to regular scheduled programming

Frank, I was told NEVER use the brass float in a marine carb...

True / False

Your input?

False. Brass floats are alcohol resistant and more suited towards fuels like E85 today.

Okay...I took off work early Thursday and went and picked up a rebuild kit for my carb ( $119.00). I just spent the day rebuilding it and then changed my oil again. The rebuild went well ( I have a Merc manual that was pretty much step-by-step).I had to to adjust the floats back to spec ( 2" drop) but otherwise everything was good.I started it up on the muffs and it is running great. I found lots of "varnish" and cleaned it up real good. I had to tweak the idle mixture screws and then brought the idle down to spec. The manual says to do this with the boat in the water, so I will re-adjust if needed next time we go out. I didn't re-read this entire post but in case it wasn't already stated, apparently the Float/needle valve stuck open causing fuel to flood my engine. Thanks again to all who responded.

It's been a long time since I've owned a carbed gas engine- so forgive me- but I'm trying to figure something out...
Mechanical fuel pump delivers fuel to the bowl only when the engine is cranking.
I know you said it wouldn't start- so you were obviously cranking it for a bit- but I can't understand how you could have dumped enough fuel down the intake manifold to literally fill all the cylinders- that's A LOT of fuel.

Even with a stuck float on a non-running engine, no more fuel than what the bowl holds would be dumped into the manifold, right? When you were cranking it, why wasn't the unburned fuel simply pushed out the valve exhaust ports? What am I missing here?

$119.00 for a rebuild kit? :smt021 Where was that from?:wow:

Tobnpr - The fuel continued to run into the carb while I pulled it an over an hour back home on the trailer. I also removed and cleaned my anti-syphon valve at the gas tank( It would seem this should have prevented the fuel from continuing to flow? ).

H20 - I Bought the rebuild kit in Sharonville, Ohio at Dry Dock Boat service.( same price I found online).

This? I want to get rid of my Q-Jet and get a different carb.

that's it....trouble with your carb ?

No, not really...

I have heard that the other carbs, Holley, Edelbrock are more efficient, easier to tune, etc.
