Gas Fume Detector

I would not own an inboard gas powered boat without one.

Hmm, I am going to answer this question a different way.

It’s not legally required and is not standard equipment.

Like a life raft or EPIRB, or wearing seatbelts in your car, your safety is increased with this device.

That being said, I have a raft, a EPIRB and I always wear my seatbelt yet I do not have a fume detector.

I have one and it seems to work in the sense that when i RARELY try it, it seems to work. I don't trust it. I'm in my engine room so often before and after "take off" I really never use it because I'm comfortable with what's going on down there. I never leave the fuel dock without going below to do a personal sniff check, and at the dock, I'm in the eng room more often than not. I would'nt reccomend spending money for one if you can do your own "due diligence". If it was free....you might use it . Ric

If you do a search, you'll find some good information on this. Some fume detectors were better than others, and where you mount it is important. Also, upgrading your blowers seems to be a popular option for both safety, reliability and performance.

A fume detector is a great safety device, but keep in mind that fires can start due to leaks or mechanical failure which can start quickly before a fume detector can warn you (i.e. a fuel hose or a connector leaks and shoots gas on a manifold, etc). This isn't common, but it can happen.
