Hello,
I am thinking of replacing the two Mercruiser 350 MAG MPI engines (transmission: Hurth V-Drives) with two diesel stern drives in a 2001 Sea Ray 310 Sundancer . There is also a Westerbeke gen set installed at the rear of the engine bay. Does anybody know if I can replace the two inboard gas engines with diesel stern drives? Any list of compatible diesel engines? What modifications need to be scheduled?
Any recomendation is more than welcome.
Thanks

I'm sure with enough money it could be done I think yanmar diesel could be retrofitted with their out drives or other out drive fuel system will need to be redone with new filters and feed and return piping plus the diesel generator fiberglass work when you remove struts and sealing shaft holes new wiring and engine mounts. Fuel tanks scrubbed and cleaned racor filters installed and I'm sure there is a lot more. And cutting transo. m for out drive I would also check weight difference between gas and the diesel.

is there anything wrong with the 350's?

I think you may find it more cost effective to replace the boat.

Consumption is my main issue... 26.5 gal/hr at 22kt...

I very much doubt that you would ever use enough fuel to pay for the conversion.

Could I ask what your $ per year spend on fuel is?

I see what you mean, around $5K per season, but I have better plans as of my retirement (!!!)

Thats what I thought. And if you convert to Diesel, you will probably still burn $3k with higher maintainance costs.

$2k per year you will never pay for it.

I don't know what the cost in the US would be, but in Australia I would suggest $70K mininimum to replace 2 engines. Plus the generator.

Unless you cut corners, 2nd Han motors, do a lot of your own labour etcetera .

Hence my original suggestion, do the sums on selling and buying what you want

Considering replacing my 2 8.1s would cost around 40000 since each power package runs about $15000 I would say a diesel conversion would run about $70000 to $100000 to do since if you look at the options when buying a boat new is $51000 up charge. I don't think as Ian said you would get any rate of return on your money.

There is a french fellow from Quebec on the Sportcruiser forum who changed the gas engines on a 310 or 340 to diesel. You might want to look him up and pm him.Sorry I don't have the time to look him up myself.

Copy, thanks, I'll try to find him. Do you remember any subject title he was in?

I would also guess the diesels will add weight to the boat as well!
