I have a 310 EC and the little chains that keeps the gas caps from falling into "the drink" have both broken off right were they get into the little clamp thingy...is there a something, maybe like a v shaped spring wire perhaps, i can use to re-attach these chains??? I sure dont want to have to dive for them at the fuel dock....

Smeone makes and sells replacement chains, but I find a better way is to use stainless steel leader material with crimp on sleeves to make my own. It is cheap and you only have to make 2 of them since they will never break or fall off.

Replacement Caps

My fill cap went swimming in Marathon Florida on a Sunday evening with everything closed. A heavy high speed nozzel rested on the ball chain and clipped it through as good as a pair of nippers would have, and plunk .... overboard with the cap.

These screw down caps can be purchased at the BIG Chain Marine Supply andn they come with ball chains. Trouble is getting to the chain attachment point inside the casting. Mine is totally inaccessable. When mine went in the drink at the gas dock I was left with just enough chain inside the fuel fill to reach the femaile threads. I searched and found stainless ball chain repair links/clasps and fished out the existing chains and attached the new chain to the stub. Needle nose pliers and a wire coat hanger hook were required.

I now carry a spare which means, which in accordance with Chad's Law of Boating, that the original one will never go overboard or fail. However, now, when fueling I insert he nozzel while holding the ball chain to prevent the weight of the nozzel and hose from crimping the chain.

After losing a gas fill cap in the catskills some years back, I now remove the chain from the gas caps on all my boats. Just inserting the fuel nozzle broke the old chain. Now I am very carefull when I remove the caps at the fuel dock and place them on board during the fueling process. After the refill, I am very carefull replacing the caps. I also carry a spare..... .....However, I like the idea of stainless leader wire.....hmmmmm....might give that a try on the 410.... :smt017

[perko makes replacement steel cable to tightly slide inside fuel hose
I've seen people using home made anchor made from coat hanger
to keep chain inside hose, but first you have to clean all paint from hanger
