I have a Garmin 5212 chart plotter and my vhf and depth sounder are the original Raymarine pieces that came with the boat. Does any one know how to have my chart plotter display the depth as well as the Raymarine depth sounder display it? Also, I am not very familiar with AIS but wondering how I can have the capability to turn it on or add it if possible on the chart plotter?

You should be able to get your depth to display by using the NMEA0183 connection from your TriData. As for AIS, you can pick up one of THESE and connect it to your Garmin. You may have to set up an NMEA2000 network or maybe it can connect via the Garmin Marine Network. NMEA2000 is great though. Simple, brainless and can be added to almost infinitely - you can add cameras, engine data, weather station, AIS, etc.

I do know I have a NMEA 2000 network because the fuel flow meters are on that and I also have a NMEA 0183 network but don't know what is on that network. I don't really understand the difference between the two but do know I have both after playing around on the chartplotter today. What is the piece called that you linked to on the garmin site? It only took me to the main page. Thanks for the help.

AIS transponder. If you already have a NMEA2000 network you just connect this thing into the backbone and it'll recognize it and it goes to work. NMEA0183 is an older form of communication and it involves connecting wires - not too bad but more complex. If you want depth on your plotter w/o changing the transducer you can get the TriData connected to Garmin and it should work. I'm not sure how to do that b/c I haven't done any 0183 connecting.

I have now learned I do not have an AIS transponder, that I am looking into adding shortly! However I do have everything on the NMEA 2000 network it seems! I have found a garmin gsd22 and gms10 behind the unit! From what I understand the gms 10 connects all the units and the gsd 22 is for sonar/water temp/depth. When I turn on my chart plotter, depth is not displayed and sonar is not even an option in maps or combinations! I am guessing a cord is loose or the gsd 22 is not working. Any thoughts on troubleshooting? Sorry for the questions I am new to the site and find it as a wealth of information

I'm not familiar with the Garmin marine network setup. You might want to take a look at THIS and see if the correct wiring is attached/present.
