Garmin Surround View Camera System

I got that same email today. I thought the same thing.

Me too. I didn't see the cost but figured it would be a lot. I wasn't wrong, but that's kinda eye watering. Plus you have to screw cameras to side of the hull - no thanks.

Ah - a bit more detail. Seems not designed for the aftermarket: "It’s available now on new builds from Garmin’s boat building partners."

Looks very similar to what is on one of our cars. Really cool, presents an image that looks like the camera is directly above.

Never considered it on a boat but that's what Garmin does. They come up with ideas for the application.

Only downside is the lifetime of the cameras in a marine environment. But I am sure they can solve that.

An interesting related side note. My wife recently bumped into a steel post in a parking lot. Very little visible damage that you can see other than small scrape and some yellow paint.

Car is currently in the shop waiting on parts. The rear bumper has to be replaced, over 5K just for the bumper. That's where one of the cameras is located.

Big time cool factor, but for 12.5K not so much. I could see needing it on a larger MY as seeing around the boat is difficult. But auto docking? Not sure I would trust that. I don't even have a bow thruster and not sure I would use it if I did.

I don't see that it is an auto docking system that controls the throttle / steering. Seems more like a system that enhances situational awareness about the location of the boat and surrounding obstacles, so the operator can then not hit the dock.

That would make this crazy for the price tag if they don't, IMO. I was reading a new boat manufacturer is trying/going to use this connected to the joystick/GPS functionality for docking. I need to find that article as to where this is going, it was compared to Lexus auto parking if I remember correctly. But yes, as it stands right now it is just monitoring your surroundings. Now if it could tie your boat up as well that would be something.

One of our cars has the overhead view but both have backup cameras that will display distances to obstacles and also show where the rear end will go based on which way the wheel is turned. I think that would be useful for a boat, much less expensive than surround and probably could be retrofit. I wonder if that is being developed?

Volvo also introduced an assisted docking function as well. They have it integrated with Garmin Volvo glass cockpit, but it seems not to use it much.
More of an extension of their dynamic positioning that holds the boat in a specific orientation so it doesn't swing in wind or currents. Only works with their IPS systems though.

So it looks like Garmin is behind the times already, "Assisted Docking" seems to be a thing for new boats. That Volvo integrations looks pretty cool. But I guess it only works if you have pods and a bow thruster. Still pretty cool to be able to parallel dock a boat.

Assisted docking is not interesting to me. Would take a long time to trust it - so many variables of wind direction, gusts, current, etc.

The increased visibility capability would be huge. Our boat has very limited docking visibility from the helm. We do ok with our headsets - wife is the "eyes" for me and she has gotten very good with her descriptions of where we are.

For a long time she would use terms of "close" or "far away". She has progressed to saying distance in feet - and even "coming in hot, slow down" on occasion.

Not sure I would ever be interested either, but the technology that provides that ability is very interesting. Nice to see such advances in the marine industry in the pleasure boat sector.

Man if I could get my wife to actually pay attention when she is on the bow trying to guide us out of our runway that would be a miracle.
