Garmin or iPad?

As Alex, will attest to "I love my IPAD" it does everything my e120 can do . I have no overheating problems, glare under the hardtop is no problem either, i used it to bring my boat home from RI last month and plan all my routes at the touch of a button not using an annoying cursor pad!!!!! I use the e120 as my radar/back up to my ipad!! Haha i bluetoothed it to the boat so i can sit on the dock and change the song, volume, or watch a movie from itunes and use the stereo from the boat. IPAD's rule. Until i get the new E9 as my primary / with bluetooth to my ipad I'll stick to the pad.

I suspect this debate was similar to when GPS units came out. Discussions like - "should I buy the new chart book or that new Garmin gizmo that apparently links to the satellites or something?"

I don't think this will be a discussion in 3-5 years as most everything will be on your ipad or tablet, and it will include the status of your home and boat, hvac systems, coffee maker, engine temps and controls for your bow thrusters just to name a few. There will be the die hards who swear their $2k Lowrance GPS is still more reliable.

I agree the tablet is quickly becoming the do it all gizmo. I also agree it is a very good gps device.

That being said, when I get stuck in open water in a rain storm with the canvas down I'm glad I spent the $2k on the weatherproof Raymarine display.

It does look cool when i put the camera on, but theres no time to really look at that either. When my ipad has radar i'll think about it. I used it last night to navigate around the anchored boats at a fireworks show. Pretty useful

Ok, this is my opinion but I do feel strongly about what I am going to type. For the record, I have sold 1000's of iPads to corporations for their mobile workers and I do believe it is a great business tool as well as a personal tool. But as a replacement for a Marine GPS, no way, unless maybe and I say maybe if it is mounted properly in an enclosed air conditioned bridge, it may be able to replace a marine GPS, but I wouldn't with all the networking we do between our GPS's and marine electronics. But the reality is, we really don't know how dependable an iPad truly is when compared to marine GPS's built to specific technical and environmental standards, like vibration and heat.

With this said, i recently had a negative experience using my iPad as a GPS. The IPad overheated from the sun and would not turn back on until it cooled off. Fortunately, i had my Garmin 3210 on and wound up using it while piloting a narrow channel. Had I only been using the IPad, I would have been up S--ts creek without a paddle. Over the years I have used Northstar, Raymarine and Garmin GPS's, and never has one overheated from the sun. I for one have bought into the iPad hook line and sinker, but to put the fate of my boat and my passengers in the hands of a $600 tablet not built to the standards of a car GPS let alone marine GPS's, NO WAY! As a back up to my marine GPS, no problem.

I'm sure you know I'm only kidding. I would never advise you to get rid of the primary navigation unit. I don't know how much you used radar on your 320, but I would advise to make it a habit to run it overtime you're underway. Besides the fact that you have to use it, it's a great helper that saved my butt on several occasions. The more comfortable you'll get with it during the day the more comfortable you'll be with it at night or in a fog.

BTW, I think it's possible to get radar data to iPad, but I think it'll require E120 to be connected to NMEA2000 network wifi switch which should allow to share the radar data to other devices via wifi. I could be wrong, but I think it should work.

Granted my ipad is running my life now:smt100 But it will not replace my e 120 yet, as far as overheating that could be a concern i havent experienced it yet. Alex, I used the radar on the 320 all the time, the RL 70c (raymarine) was so tiny and the location made it dificult to use so I installed a Garmin 4208 and the RL as radar . I'm just amazed at what my Ipad can do so far. What i like is the Raymarine MFD's are now bluetooth enabled allowing you to plot a course on your (I device) at home and transfer to the plotter when you get to the boat. So you can see the direction in which they are going.
