Can someone tell me if the garmin chartplotters without the transducer {fishfinder} work as a depth finder or do i need the transducer version. Thanks

The Transducer is the Depthfinder/Fishfinder it "Pings" a Sonar Signal and Determines the Depth, Obstructions and Fish!!

If you have a 4--S or 5--S series then all you need is a compatible transducer. The units without the S will not show sonar. If you have a 4---, 5---, 6--- or 7--- you need a sonar module and transducer. On my boat I have a 4212 and a 546S connected to an Airmar B744V transducer. The 4212 and 546S are wired together via the NMEA 2000 backbone. I use the 546S for sonar and backup chartplotter.

You need one of the "S" models to read depth. The "S" models may or may not come with a transducer.

I have a 536s unit but to have a depth readout on the screen you will need an additional transducer. My boat has a depth transducer from Chap but my dealer said it can't be hooked into the Garmin.

I have a 541 plotter, a non S model and using the compatible transducer I have water depth. The "S" model allows sonar readings with the compatible transducer as Hottoddie stated.

I have and older garmin fishfinder and i'm going to see if it's compatiable with the 5 series, if not i will buy another transducer. Thanks for the info.

I wasn't thinking of the Smart transducers. You need a $300+ transducer to do this on a non-S model, correct?

It's still not cheap but, I used an Intelliducer, $200 MSRP which gives you water depth and temp.

The guy at WM told me you couldn't get a transducer to read depth with a non-"S" model but, I spoke directly to Garmin and they confirmed you could. It's nice having all the info on one screen.
