Anyone looked at/played with the new Garmin 740s. I am looking to update my aging Lowrance plotter. I was aiming for the 4208. But this new model and the 4208 are similar in price.

Just wondering if the touch screen and maybe a faster processor is worth the slightly smaller screen..

Thanks for the feed back

Some people have complained that the smaller touchscreens and the motion of a smaller boat are a bad combination.

I don't know if that's true, or if those people just aren't comfortable with a touchscreen. I have the 5212, and it's awesome. The most common action I perform on a plotter is panning: what's ahead, what's to the side etc. A touchscreen is perfect for that. After getting used to swipping your finger across the screen to pan, using a track pad seems absurd. (and a LOT harder - especially in waves, which is why the above complaint doesn't necessarily register for me)

Speed is BIG. Slow redraw creates other problems. ie: you might select the wrong function, and then while the system catches up, you've over-corrected and given it more work to do. I'm very familiar with the 4208, and especially with the latest software, it's actually a decent performer, but imo, faster is always better.
