I just installed a Garmin 7212 pre-loaded with Bluecahrt G2 US maps. I networked it with a 4210. The install went swimmingly, no problems, but powered up and networked I get the same old map that was loaded on the 4210. I thought the 7212 would have a much better image. Does any one have any input on these units.

Your expectations may have been skewed by the way Garmin uses model series. The 7212 isn't 3 generations more modern than a 4000 unit. It's actually only one generation up. The 4000's and 5000's were "siblings", with the 4 designating a keypad unit, and the 5 designating a touchscreen.

They used the same logic with the keypad 6000 series, which is the sibling to your 7212.

So the generational difference between my 5212 and a 6212 is the same as your 4210 and 7212, even though the numbers suggest otherwise.

To enhance the imagery, pick up a G2 Vision chip.

Thanks, that's what I thought I had to do, spend more $$$. When I buy and load the chip will the same imagery show on both screens being as they are networked?

Thanks for your help,

Yes, it can be shared across the network. IMO, the biggest difference between those two units is speed. You'll quickly notice that the 7212 is MUCH faster, so you can use the 4210 to bring up an aerial view of a harbor for example, but you'll want to do panning and zooming etc. on the 7212.

One additional advantage to the G2 chip is now you can auto-route. The built in maps won't do that.
