Has anyone done this? I'm installing a Garmin 741 and was trying to decide on a ram mount, the arm that comes with the unit or maybe flush or surface mount. I'm going to be removing the Clarion remote but want to leave the Lowrance depth gauge in place, maybe buy the needed space and erase the Clarion hole. It might be nice to tilt the gps towards me, but also have it be convenient for my wife copilot who usually sits next to me to operate. Just wondering what others may have done.

I put mine on the starboard side of the wheel just in front of the plexiglass chart cover in the factory mount. If you put it below the wheel you would not be able to see it standing. I can also adjust the angle for sitting or standing to achieve optimum visual clarity. I removed the Lowrance depth finder and put in a sounder for the Garmin. Don't make my mistake and get one that does not do temperature. (Don't ask me why they even offer it that way.)

Does seem like a good spot. I would like to have a passenger access it though and I have the remote and old gps holes to cover. I'll have to consider standing, thanks for mentioning that. This is the dash now, with the old gps which I can see standing. Perhaps the best thing is to use the factory mount in that spot.

This is where I mounted mine. I was concerned at first it would block my view but I don't have any problems seeing it. It is as far starboard as I could get it. I did not like the idea of bumping it of I mounted it to the port. I also like the fact if I get water over the windshield it is slightly protected. I mounted an auxiliary speaker to the mounting bracket for my VHF as well so I could hear it better.

I have moved my radio controls too to make room for the fuel computer.

Good luck,

Mark

I ended up modifying the bracket the 741 ships with to make it about 1.5" shorter. I cut off the round ends and drilled new holes. It still tilts up and down and works well from a standing position (leaning against the seat). The bracket doesn't really look pretty having been hacked up but it's not noticeable. I found there is barely enough room to flush mount a 7" garmin in the center of that dash section and if you did the steering wheel would be in the way.

I decided on a flush mount and reorganized the displays while at it.
