I gritted my teeth and then screwed the base on... but not before the wife and I sat for what seems like two hours putting the mount in various locations since it was going to be permanent. We didn't want it on the left side since it would block conversations with folks up front, up top was too high for my wife even without the Ram Mount, thought about on top and to the right through the glass, but the bimini would get in the way and would require some unsightly way of running the cables. Ultimately, this position allows us to swivel the Garmin in almost any direction and does not block any guages. The mount screwed right into the base of the Garmin also, so very clean looking.
The generic mount has a rectangular base that was bigger than the base of the Garmin. But this unit has a round mount (piece that attached to the Garmin) the same as the base (that gets attached to the boat).

and was a much cleaner looking install.
