I tried updating my 430 with the latest software update via SD card. The update appears to have downloaded onto the card. However, the GPS does not go to the update screen when the card is inserted.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Did you download the update to the card and then try the update? Or did you run the update on your pc in order to install the update to the card?

I just updated a 546s for a buddy did you follow these instructions from Garmin? It sounds like the installation file ( not the update data ) didn't install on the card, I've had this happen before.

http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=8745#Instruct

Installation Instructions

Click on 'Download' and choose to save the file to your computer.

Choose a location where you can easily find the file, such as the 'My Documents' folder or 'C:\'.

Once the download is complete, go to the location where you saved the file.

Double-click on the downloaded file. This will automatically extract the files to C:\Garmin and run a program to transfer the software update to an SD card.

Power on the device and make sure all attached network devices are powered on as well.

Insert the card into the card slot of your primary device. Select 'Update Software' in the window that automatically displays. If you do not have a primary device with a card slot, please see your dealer.

After the update completes, all Garmin Marine Network devices and NMEA 2000 sensors will have the latest software. This ensures all of the devices will be able to communicate with each other. Note: If you have additional chartplotters connected to NMEA 2000 and not the Garmin Marine Network, you will have to independently update each chartplotter. After the update of the Garmin Marine Network completes, insert the update card into each NMEA 2000 chartplotter.

Sometimes can be issue with max card size...

◦GPSMAP 420, 430, 440 series v3.10 and below - 2GB SD card
◦GPSMAP 420, 430, 440 series v3.20 and above - 64GB SD card

Thanks everyone. I am using a 64GB SD card. Also following the Garmin update as described by Bob. I am downloading to the computer and then to the SD cards. I have also tried different cards.

I will try contacting Garmin tomorrow. Any other suggestions are appreciated.

Recap:
- Model Garmin 430 (If I check see only aviation model)
- SW version > 3.1
- unzipped files root SD card

When was the last update performed?

Nope, not the aviation model. It's a GPSMAP 430. I also tried a 32MB card. This is the first time I have updated it. Let me see if I can find an 8GB card.

Thx, GPSMAP 430... Try SD card size 2GB or 1 GB, to be sure problem isn't related to SW version.

Well............................the 2MB card didn't work either! However, I went to the Smithsonian and found a 1MB card and sucessfully completed the update. I also called Garmin and they said the 2MB card should have worked. With the unit now updated, I was also told that I can now use the larger SD cards, up to to 32MB............we'll see. So, I now have the latest software update, version 5.6, up from 2.5.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions and help......card size does matter, Robert!

Thanks for posting your results, I was starting to lean toward a bad card reader which I doubt you would have paid Garmin to fix, the last older unit I called Garmin about having repaired was a ridiculous amount to pay it's still in the garage somewhere.

Amazing how far technology has come in such a short time, wonder what the future holds good or bad it's coming.

Bob,

You are welcome. Happy to post the results. Looks like I have a bunch of new features, too.

Thanks SeaRide for feedback. Possible your 2GB card was of the type SDHC i/o SD which can be an issue... seems the same, but not compatible.. Garmin can only read SDHC after firmware update (and still SD).
