Sifting through the maze of marketing on various anchor types is giving me a headache so I thought I'd come to you for your opinions.

I hear people rave about the Rocna Anchor. A galvanized Rocna will run me about $550. However, I have an opportunity to purchase a slightly used (but very pretty) stainless steel Suncor Plowmaster hinged plow anchor of similar weight for about the same price. New the Suncor costs $1500 b/c of the SS.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Michael

Depends on if you want the best performing or the shineyest looking. I had a CQR anchor on my old boat and currently have a Rocna anchor. The Rocna anchor sets better and holds better in all the conditions that I used it in.

Michael,
I saw the stainless steel ultra anchor at the boatshow yesterday in one of the booths. Had it set up with a generic plow anchor and theirs and it dug in fast and deep as you pulled on it with the generic plow in the other hand. Havent checked prices, but it was impressive.

I have the literature at home, but I think it was from this company. Having read that there can be problems using non-kodiak plow anchors on here with some of the bow rollers, I asked, and the guy said that they have outfitted a lot of searays without difficulty.

Michael,

May I ask what happened to your original anchor. Are you replacing it due to poor performance?

I've seen the Rocna Anchor in action, yes it's better and will give you more room for error. I have very nice SS delta that has been proven "working horse". Your question depends on few variables, but most important one is the depth, bottom and swinging room of the area where you'll be anchoring the most. There are always options, so if you really like the look of the SS Suncor Plowmaster the way to "compensate the performance difference" between Rocna is simply use more scope. To have good night sleep you can never have too much scope, the swinging room is your limiting factor.

Another point, since you're upgrading anchor I would go for larger size than original 35lb that comes with our boats.

It's a bit tough call, but I would not go back to galvanize after having very nice SS anchor.

Rocna without a doubt, before moving over to a sports cruiser I had a 34' sailing catamaran of which I used a Rocna and it never let me down once

Hi guys,

Thanks for the suggestions and questions guys.

I'm upgrading my ground tackle b/c I think the 35# plow anchor is light for my boat ( I guess anchors don't sell boats). Sure, it holds, generally, but I'm not comfortable when it starts to blow. I want to really dig in deep and sleep (relatively) soundly.

I love the idea of putting a pretty shiny hook on my bow but I'm going to go with function over form on this one. I ordered a 55# Rocna along with new rode: 150 feet of chain spliced to 150 feet of 8 strand.

I have a 2005 280DA and have been entertaining replacing the anchor with a stainless one. I really don't like the look of the factory one. I like the clean look... Not sure what the original equipment size is and would like to replace with the same style and size so I will not need to have any modifications. Anyone know aht the style and or size is?
