This season started out one pump down and the motor fires right up.Now its full throttle and a bit of turning over to start.Today after a trip to seattle and over night in bell harbor got back shut down at the pump out in the marina and I barely got it started its takeing full throttle and almost flooding the thing to start it.Any thoughts. Its a 1990 350 merc carerated,

Sounds like the choke is sticking. When mine would do this a found the wire off my electric choke. If you see the butterfliy completely closed in the carb on a warm day start up use a screw driver to partially open it and the motor should start.

Only do this if your in a bad spot. Mine has never backfired doing this but it is a possibility.

This is a common problem when the motor is hot. But you didn't say weather the motor is cold or hot when it is hard to start.

If it is hard to start when hot, it is because the fuel evaporated out of the carb and flooded the motor and full throttle is needed to clear the flooding.

I had the same problem but found that Edelbrock make a fibre insulating distance piece about 1/2" that goes between the carb and the inlet manifold. This keeps the carb cooler and prevents the evaporation of the fuel. Problem solved.

If you do fit the distance piece and you don't have an electric choke, you will have to fabricate a new choke linkage to go from the bi metalic actuator to the carb. I made mine from a piece of 1/16" wire I bought from a hobby store.

Thanks that is exactly it,I went down to the marina today just tryed to start it to see and it fired right up,I had just returned from a 30 mile ride when it wouldnt start when i shut it off
