  • every time I fuel up I get strong gas odor in the cabin. I blew out vent lines and they were clear. Found this on my port side. Not sure if this is just cracking on outer wall. Even if this is bad, I don’t know how the fumes get in the cabin.

Any ideas?

If that is your fill hose you need to replace it asap it is on its way out. Could be a source of the smell if not you sure need to find it. I would double check the fuel tank and all the hoses when you are filling it to see if you can spot the leak. It doesn't take much spillage to stink up the boat and to also blow it up. I have seen two boats explode because of a fuel leak or spillage not a pretty sight. Also gas fumes are heavier than air so will go to a lower point in the boat which will be the cabin.

That is the fill hose on port side. I noticed the starboard side has a tape wrapped around it. Is that common?

You'll need to replace both fill hoses. I had the same issue and only identified the problem when filling up. Very dangerous and wouldn't use the boat until that is resolved.

I couldn't believe how bad mine where and yes it filled the cabin with fuel smell.

Holy crap. took hose off today, poured some water in it.
only 12 years old. Boat was surveyed by a reputable dealer in ozarks last year.

Replace all your hoses now! That is the old hose pre-E10 stuff and the parafins have all leached out and fumes are permeating through the hose walls. Hoses should be changed every five years anyway. Your boat is a floating bomb. Don't use it, don't smoke, don't turn on any electrical equipment until it's fixed.

Replaced both fill hoses. They were a pita to get to.
Not sure ethanol was the issue. boats this size usually get gas on the lake. all the fuel docks i’ve been to are ethanol free.

the cracks in the hose were at the tight bends on the thru hull fitting.

I need to look at the fill hose on my little Bayliner Capri the last time I stuck my nose down near the splashwell opening I got a wift of gas. This is a outboard boat so no danger of a engine explosion but not good never the less. I think I replaced it about 8-10 years ago in Alaska but now I live in Vegas and the heat here will kill rubber items real quick. FYI it is a bear to get to.

Great post! Just bought an 07 and the water intake hose is cracking - already ordered new hose.

I think my leak was due to repeated gouging by the fuel pump nozzle being inserted. The hose takes a hard bend down and the dispenser nozzle would have to hit it. The stbd side has an angled so the hose doesn’t bend so bad. Port side doesn’t. Look at the pic and imagine where that nozzle would be inside

That looks like weathering and old age. The rubber dries out and then cracks. If you bend the hose you might hear a cracking noise from the rubber hardening and losing its flexabilty. The fuel nozzle really can't hit the rubber and damage it because the fuel fill has a nozzle on it that the hose connects onto that is made of metal. You would have to really shove the fuel nozzle deep into the filler to hit the rubber, and besides the nozzle end isn't that sharp.

Time to do fuel fill lines and vent lines. Do all of them and do them now!

I had to do mine at the start of the season. On the 88 it wasn't fine
