Got into a discussion about this idea with some fellow boaters-anyone ever install something like this? Diesel Fuel Doctor, Algae-x diesel fuel cleaning. The one they are recomending is the LG-X400 In-Line Fuel Conditioner-one for each main & a smaller one for the Genny. This really isn't fuel "polishing". It is sort of a Magnetic Fuel Conditioner added before the Racors -Any one have any experience with something like this??

he's trying to control a slight sooting problem on 6cta's-wonder if this is a good option?

Hi,

I have never used anything like this but it seems to me that if he is having an algae problem he would be plugging up the secondary filter on the engine. if it's a bad problem he would see algae in the Racors.
All of the mechanical Cummis engines put out soot. it's the nature of the beast. if he has sever sooting then he has injection problems that would need to be addressed.
With my boat I get soot it ends up on anything in the cockpit a very fine soot coating the seats and deck after long runs.
If he is getting more than that he might need to have a mechanic check the injection system.

If the magnetic fuel polisher doesn't help, I have some red string, some soul cloth and a little miracle water that will do just as much good.

Cummins are known to be a little smokey on cold starts and to soot a little when they are overloaded, like when you can't quite turn up rated rpms. The other sooting cause is too much throttle application relative to the engine load. Try to avoid jack-rabbit starts and try running to WOT to see if the engines are loaded properly.
