Fuel guage question

I have a question regarding the fuel guage on my 88 SR seville 4.3. It seems when I fill the tank it shows full but after going a short distance it drops from full to 3/4's then to 1/4 where it seems to stay for quite some time. I started by topping off the tank, which took only 6 gals even though the guage showed only slightly more than a 1/4 tank  I know these fuel guages are not that accurate but this seems to be way out of whack. Any suggestions on a solution ? Can there be a problem besides the guage ? If it shows between a 1/4 and 1/2 of a tank but fills with only 6 gals of fuel a leak would seem improbable, if it was a leak that would have to be one heck of a leak. I believe my tank holds 30-32 gals but not sure. How many hours should I excpect out of a full tank ? Thanks

Anybody ?????

on my 89 bow rider, the gauge did not read at all. I took the sender out of the tank and noticed there was a corroded connection. I think you will find this, or the resistor slider panel is grooved out. New senders are not to expensive.
