I just bought a 2002 280Da with 100 gallan fuel tank. Any experience on range or fuel economy? I'm planning on going to Channel Islands out of Santa Barbara, ca and wanting to have an idea on range. Thanks.

I went 100 nautical miles on a tank of gas in my 280 and every alarm possible was going off the last 20 miles. To be safe I woulld get gas at 80 miles. That is one of the drawbacks on an otherwise very good boat.

depends on the conditions. Good conditions with calmish seas... 80 miles before you start looking for a fuel dock. Rough seas and I would be looking at 60 miles.

I have gone as far as 132mi and when I filled it took 89 gal. I was about 10 miles from running it dry. This was in good conditions cruising around 28mph. I normally plan to be fueled at or before the 100mi mark.

Hi guys.
I'm confused of your fuel consumption.
According to 1 mpg consumptin @ 25 mph speed what is the hourly consumption in terms of gallons? Is it makes 25 gallons? And also how many hours you can go with a full tank 100 gallons until unusable 5 gallons ?
It came too much for me a (single) diesel owner burning at 20 knots (23 mph) 14 liters (3,5 gallons).

Melida,

Your numbers are 3.5 GPH at 20 knots, single engine counter rotating prop stern drive.

My boat with an 496 (8.1 liter) 375 HP gas (petrol) at 20 knots is burning about 17 GPH.

Looks like I'll see the bottom of my tank long before you do!

Henry,
thank you for the reply
my boat's engine is 3,6 liter inline 6 cylinder supercharged aftercooled and turbo charged 285 hp 525 nm torque duoprop one counter rotating and counter clockwise rotating cruising @ 3500 rpm 20knots and I always refuel diesel after 23-25 hours which is 85-90 gallons. yearly I do minimum 100 hours last year99 one before year 115 so I buy 4 tanks a year.
I recommend you diesel.

I agree with the above...
25MPH- 1.4 MPG
I'll tell you about an aha moment as we were making the crossing to Catalina.
Smartcraft showed me burning about +/-10 gph on the digital gauge, but the analog fuel gauge and the digital fuel gauges were dropping like stones thats when i realized.....
Two engines each buring 10gph---20gph on the open sea. Find the sweet spot that lets you run the lowest rpms and stay on plane as you climb waves. If you run 35+ mph expect to burn 15gph x 2. :wow:

wow really aha.
The boat is big and heavy accordingly huge consumption. In my country people cant afford it because 1liter gas is 2.25 usd and 1 gallon 8.5 usd so starting from 260DA people buys with diesel option

OK, here is the big question. Did you find the secret storage compartment in the mid birth yet?

Doug,

I looked at his numbers. He is getting an average of 3.6 gph based on total number of hours and gallons consumed between fill ups. My guess is that his diesel is doing about the same consumption in terms of fuel flow rate as my 496, except he has lower (30%) HP and fuel costs.

Yea I found it thanks a lot.
Above I wrote the gas prices in my country and frequently gas prices are increasing because of the government policy to get much more tax from car owners. Also the diesel fuel price is 1liter 1.88 usd 1 gallon 7.13 usd while with single diesel cruises @ 20 knots and wot 30-32 knots same speed as twin 4.3s and almost nearly to twin 5.0s and 496mag since the accelaration takes more more seconds from them.
