My 2000 340 DA has a water system issue. The boat was commissioned just last week and this is the first time I am using it.
Here are the issues:

  1. It seems that there is air in the system because it spurts water and air when I turn on the faucets
  2. i cleaned some "gunk" out of the screen that is connected to the water pump and that pump is in the engine compartment
  3. the water pump continues to run. It will run lightly when no water is needed and run harder when water is needed. In previous years it would run and shut off and turn on only when water is need

Anyone have any ideas what's happening here?

Thanks

It sounds like you just have air trapped in the water lines. Start at the faucet the farthest from the water pump and bleed the air by opening the faucet, close it, let it build pressure, then repeat. Eventually, you should be able to purge the air and get the pump to cycle normally.

On the list of things I would check is an open faucet (i.e.: transom shower, washdown, head,...) and also make sure your hot water heater tank didn't have the drain left slightly open. You might also try running the hot water tap to make sure the heater has filled with water. Worst case is you have a loose fitting or split water line from the winter.

Playing off original post. On a 52DB I noticed water coming out of one of 2 "vents" just below the stbd gunwale this weekend. It was hot water draining. Then noticed when using hot water it would pulsate. The manual identified this vent as holding tank vent - and the one next to it as hot water overflow . Must be reversed. So, assume there is some type of pressure relief valve that might be leaking through?

Also, make sure you have enough fresh water in the water tank (if you're using the pump). Do you spurt out air with a hose connected to the water inlet?

There is a pressure relief valve on the tank that discharges overboard. Mine started discharging and I replaced it with one I bought at Home Depot. Simple fix...

If the water in your tank is scuzzy, that screen will continue to get gunked up until all that water is gone. Check the screen again. Happened to a friend - it was the gift that kept giving. 1/4 shot-glass of Clorox each time you fill the tank will prevent it from happening again.

Comes down to two possibilities - if the tank level reduces over time due to the pump running continuously there is a leak on the pressure (down stream) side of the system. If the tank level does not reduce and the pump continues to run there is an air leak on the suction side of the system (between the pump and tank. I suspect the latter as the system "spurts" water. Inspect the tank to make sure the liquid level covers the suction tube and the suction tube hasn't fallen/broken off; look at all of the tube connections between the tank and pump; and look at the filter to see if it's leaking air.
